Beauty...

Years...

"There are years that ask questions and years that answer." --Zora Neale Hurston  (not totally sure if this is the author, but I am assuming it is, since Dirty Feet and Lily White Intentions used it in her post. let me know if I'm wrong).

Love

What is Love?
Simone Weil

Love is an orientation and not a state of the soul.
Anyone who does not know this will fall into despair
at the first onset of affliction.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Hope of Advent
Eberhard Arnold
You have perhaps waited for years to be freed from some need. For a long, long time you have looked out from the darkness in search of the light, and have had a difficult problem in life that you have not been able to solve in spite of great efforts. And then, when the time was fulfilled and God’s hour had come, did not a solution, light, and deliverance come quite unexpectedly, perhaps quite differently than you thought?
"Friendship with ones self is all important, because without it one cannot be friends with anyone else in the world."
Eleanor Roosevelt
Happiness is...
Happiness
Carl Sandburg
I asked the professors who teach the meaning of life
     to tell me what is happiness.
And I went to famous executives who boss the work
     of thousands of men.
They all shook their heads and gave me a smile
     as though I was trying to fool with them
And then one Sunday afternoon I wandered out
     along the Desplaines River
And I saw a crowd of Hungarians under the trees
     with their women and children and a keg of beer
     and an accordion.
When You Give
Christopher Morley
When you give someone a book, you don’t give him just paper, ink, and glue. You give him the possibility of a whole new life.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

"The unthankful heart... discovers no mercies; but let the
thankful heart sweep through the day and, as the magnet
finds the iron, so it will find, in every hour, some
heavenly blessings!"
--Henry Ward Beecher

"Gratitude makes sense of our past, brings peace for today, and creates a vision for tomorrow."

"Zest is the secret of all beauty. There is no beauty that is attractive without zest."
Christian Dior

"I am enough of an artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world."

Gossip...

What's Wrong with Gossip?
Eberhard Arnold

There is no law but love. Love is joy in others. Therefore it should be out of the question to speak about another person in a spirit of irritation or vexation. There must never be talk, either in open remarks or by insinuation, against anyone, or against their individual characteristics—and under no circumstances behind their back. Gossiping in one’s family is no exception. Direct address is the brotherly or sisterly service we owe anyone whose weaknesses cause a negative reaction in us. An open word spoken directly to another person deepens friendship and will not be resented.

Pebbles and Mountains

"It isn't the mountains ahead to climb that wear you out; it's the pebble in your shoe."
Muhammad Ali

"We promise according to our hopes and perform according to our fears."
--Francois De La Rochefoucauld

"The key to any success, no matter how you define it, is having the audacity to believe you deserve it."   --Allison Werth

"In everyone's life at some time our inner fire goes out. It is then burst into flame by an encounter with another human being. We should all be thankful for those people who rekindle the inner spirit."
--Albert Schweitzer

Many Faces of Joy...

-The Many Faces of Joy by Philip B. Kunhardt Jr.
"Joy is contagious.
It can spread like a forest fire,
Whipped by a high, hot wind.
Joy can be shared in a crowd.
Or it can be savored all alone.
Joy can bellow.
Or it can fall soft as a kitten's tread.
Joy can excite.
Or it can comfort.
Joy can be sensuous.
Or it can spring from the intellect.
Joy can bewitch.
Joy can be sweet.
Or it can be zesty, euphoric, giddy.
It can teach. It can heal.
It can lay to rest old pain.
In a world so darkened by suffering and uncertainty,
joy can brighten our heavens and make life worth living all over again."

"I don't know how you define rock star, but I'm pretty sure water doesn't leak into the trunk of his Mazda whenever it rains." -- Spoon's Britt Daniel

"The real test of friendship is: Can you literally do nothing with the other person? Can you enjoy together those moments of life that are utterly simple? They are the moments people look back on at the end of life and number as their most sacred experiences." --Eugene Kennedy
